SQL replica creation error ID 2033

I am having real issues creating replicas for a couple of databases on my production SQL cluster.

the error description is: "DPM encountered an error while performing an operation for\\?\GLOBALROOT\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy73\Data\...dbname.mdf on servername (ID 2033 Details: the system cannot find the file specified (0x80070002)).

I can see the VSS events 3197 3198 and 18264 occurring and the backup being taken by VSS on the target server. DPM also shows me about 1GB of data being transferred before this error occurs.

This happens on both my 16GB database and my 527GB database. I have a number of smaller dbs that seem to have been created ok.

I have a feeling this may be due to my configuration using mount points, I had to do this as I have a number of instances and would have run out of drive letters!

the configuration is a D:\ drive 1GB that then has a number of larger mount points for DB, Logs, Tempdb etc mounted onto it.

any help appreciated.

the really strange thing is another instance is very similar but with a 2GB E: drive and I have been able to back that up even including 73GB databases.
