DPM 2012 R2 and SQL Database Synchronization problem

$

I have DPM 2012 R2 backing up a SQL 2014 database.

Recovery model of database is set as “Full”. Synchronization frequency setting 0f Protection Group is 15 minutes. Express Full Backup is once a day.

But in “select Short-term Goals” page, there is an info it says "Recovery points will be created for some members in the
protections group based on the express full backup schedule.  To view members for which full backup is supported, click view members” and my DB is in that list.

Value of “Last Database Log Backup” of database in SQL Server Management Studio is “None”.

So DPM backup DB once a day not synchronizing every 15 minutes.

How can I fix this?

Thank you in advance.

DPM won't do incremental backups on some SQL 2005 databases

We have a new installation of DPM 2012 running on Server 2008 R2. It's seems to be working ok apart from that it won't allow us to backup some of the SQL databases incrementally.

We have SQL 2005 SP3 (64-bit) running on Server 2003 R2 Enterprise x64 with database mirroring. There are around 90 databases being protected on this server in a single protection group with co-located data, and about 2 thirds are backing up fine with 15 minute increments.

However, the rest will not allow any incremental recovery points. The express full backup works fine, scheduled and manually, but when trying to run a manual incremental recovery point the option is greyed out. The databases are in 'Full Recovery' mode and have now have no other backups running from them. I've tried taking one of them out of the protection group and putting it into its own new group but I get the same problem.

Can anyone shed any light on this please?

DPM Fails to Clean Up Incremental SQL 2012 Backups

‌Hello,

We are running DPM 2019 U1 on a Windows 2016 server. When backing up backing up large SQL 2012 databases, the following error occurs every other backup job:

DPM failed to clean up data of old incremental backups on the replica for SQL Server 2012 database INSTANCE\DBName on SERVER.FQDN. Synchronization will fail until the replica cleanup succeeds. (ID 30134 Details: Internal error code: 0x809909B0)

These databases are sub 200GB, Full SQL backup, backed up hourly.

The weird part, is that this happens every other hour, with the alternating hour, the backups complete without issue. For example:

7:30am backup failes, with error
8:30am backup completes, without error.

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Mathew

SQL Backups will only complete if run manually

Hi Everyone,

We have DPM 2010 installed on a Windows 2008 R2 server (HP Tape Library attached) and we are experiencing an odd issue. We have a few SQL 2005 DB's that will only backup to disk if we run the jobs manually. When they are run according to schedule they consistently fail. I haven't found a similar issue to this in the forums so any help would be great. The recovery model for these DB's are set to simple or bulk-logged.

The description I get for the error is as follows:

Type: Recovery point

Status: Failed
Description: Execution of SQL command failed for SQL Server 2005 database DB Name on domainname with reason : BACKUP LOG is terminating abnormally.
BACKUP LOG cannot be performed because there is no current database backup.
. (ID 30173 Details: Internal error code: 0x80990D18)

Let me know if you need anymore information. Thanks.

SQL 2017 Cluster Availability Group Backup

Does DPM 2016 support backup of SQL 2017 Availability Groups?

We upgraded to SQL 2017 this weekend and while the Cluster and Availability Group shows up in the DPM new/modify protection group wizard it won't populate with the database. Using the update data sources refresh button doesn't help. The SQL DB shows up in DPM under each of the individual servers in the cluster, it just won't show up under the availability group.

Was working fine with SQL 2016.

Thanks.

DPM - Service account?

Hi there,

I'm using DPM 2012 w/ SP1 and am trying to back up some SQL databases. I installed the DPM Agent to one of the SQL servers as the SQL Service Account but am still getting the error "user does not have sysadmin rights". I have looked in the SQL Management and can confirm that the SQL Service Account is a sysadmin. Is there a way of finding out which account is trying to run these backups?

Thanks!

Protection Group creation does not list SQL

Hi,

I have implemented SC DPM 2019 and am trying to setup backup for SQL2017RTM named instance (on Server 2019 cluster).

I have installed the agents on the 2 nodes and added NT AUTHORITY\System to the sysadmins role.

When I go in to create a protection group I cannot list SQL anywhere.  I get the nodes and the Windows Cluster name (no SQL cluster name).  I can expand on the nodes and am able to select "All Shares", "All Volumes" or "System Protection".

I get nothing when I try to expand the Windows Cluster name.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the agent to no avail.  I have also disabled the firewall on both nodes.

Kind regards

Shane

Problem to backup Database SQL in SIMPLE mode

Hi guys,
I have a problem with protection of SQL DB.
My Database  is configured for use SIMPLE mode, but DPM try to backup the DB as if setting is FULL mode.
At any hour DPM try to create a DB recovery point but this process is failed with this error:

"Execution of SQL command failed for SQL Server 2012 database xxxxx\<nome DB> on <server SQL> with reason : BACKUP LOG is terminating abnormally.
The statement BACKUP LOG is not allowed while the recovery model is SIMPLE. Use BACKUP DATABASE or change the recovery model using ALTER DATABASE.
. (ID 30173 Details: Internal error code: 0x80990D18)"

I have tryed to:
1) remove the DB from protection group and re-add the db
2) Set DB to FULL end return to SIMPLE
   Set DB to FULL
   Remove DB from protection group
   SET DB to SIMPLE
Re-add the DB to protection group

But nothing of this resolve my problem.

Thank tou for any idea.

What are the permission required at Client SQL server side to configure backup in DPM 2019

I am planning to start SQL DB backup by DPM. I am logging in DPM server with my domain Admin account ARIF which has DPM Admin rights and other file servers backup is running ok.

1. What is permission required at client SQL DB to start backup?

2. Do  I need permission at each SQL DB?

3. Suppose I take online backup of SQL DB 2012 and I restore it at SQL DB 2016, will this create problem?

4. Do I need any special permission at there server where I am planning to restore it. FYI, have already installed MS SQL 2016 setup and created a default instance.

I have configured Backup of Vcenter SQL DB. VMware vcenter server and its DB are at two different server. I have configured backup of Vcenter DB. Backup is running perfect and no consistency problem. But recently, No one is able to login in vcenter and even portal is not accessible. So

1. is there anything that happened because of DPM?

2. Is it something like during backup process if someone would access vcenter portal (vcenter DB), will it be courrepted?

3.  Does DPM lock the DB before proceeding backup?

Data Protection Manager (DPM) SQL Database Consistency Check Always Fails ID 2033

Hello,

I am backing up all SQL databases for an SQL Server using Microsoft Data Protection Manager (DPM).

Most of the Databases backup successfully except the 2 largest Databases which always fail after a few minutes. They then try to run a consistency check but that also always fails with the below error:

Affected area:    SERVER_NAME\database_name
Occurred since:    08/07/2020 12:50:45
Description:    The replica of SQL Server 2016 database SERVER_NAME\database_name on server.domain.com is inconsistent with the protected data source. All protection activities for data source will fail until the replica is synchronized with consistency check. You can recover data from existing recovery points, but new recovery points cannot be created until the replica is consistent.

For SharePoint farm, recovery points will continue getting created with the databases that are consistent. To backup inconsistent databases, run a consistency check on the farm. (ID 3106)
DPM encountered an error while performing an operation for \\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy81\SQL_Data\MSSQL13.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\DATA\database_name.mdf on server.domain.com (ID 2033 Details: The system cannot find the file specified (0x80070002))
    More information
Recommended action:    1) Refer to the detailed error code in the description above. Retry this operation after the issue has been fixed.
2) If the error was due to insufficient resources, then it could be a transient failure and you should retry this operation after some time.
    Synchronize with consistency check.
Run a synchronization job with consistency check...

DPM restore to alternate SQL server with Instance

$

Hello all,

I'm having real trouble figuring out how to restore an SQL backup from one server to another SQL server (with a named instance) using Azure Backup Server.

I am able to

$PGroup = Get-DPMProtectionGroup -DPMServerName "DPM SERVER"
$PObjects = Get-DPMDatasource -ProtectionGroup $PGroup[0] | Where-Object {$_.Name -eq 'DBNAME'}
$RPoint = Get-DPMRecoveryPoint -Datasource $PObjects[0] | Sort -Property RepresentedPointInTime -Descending | Select-Object -First 1

I get stuck on this line

$ROption = New-DPMRecoveryOption

Can someone help me figure out how to put this line together with the following variables?

SQL1 = Original SQL Server

SQL2 = New SQL Server for restore

INSTANCE = Instance name on SQL2 (i.e. SQL2\INSTANCE)

I want to restore it to the same DB name on the new server.

Thank you
